Beautifying Yourself from the Inside Out - Part II

Piggy-backing on last week’s article of how to beautify yourself from the inside out, I wanted to delve into further nutrients and herbs for the skin. These next key ingredients act in various ways, from decreasing inflammation and modulating your immune system to boosting collagen and supplementing detoxification. But they all have one thing in common, clearing you up naturally, for the glow that you want and deserve!

Fish Oil - One of the most famous anti-inflammatory products out there is fish oil. And what is acne after all, but an inflamed and clogged hair follicle by way of bacterial build up or dead skin cells. There are various forms of fish oil out there; from different marine sources, to multiple routes of ingesting these oils, to the significance of the EPA:DHA ratio. In a later article I will break down the complicated science behind fish oils; but in terms of promoting inner beauty, let's rate fish oil in terms of efficacy.

In first place is Krill oil. It is more effective than your basic fish oil when treating inflammatory skin issues. This is due to Krill oil’s high concentration of antioxidants and phospholipids, which play a significant role in every cell membrane throughout our body.

Next in line comes good old fish oil, for which I recommend ProOmega 2000 as my Go-To. The best part about using fish oil in your beauty routine is that it is also used in the treatment of mood disorders. So, if you have a history of problematic skin, which has also affected you emotionally or lowered your self-confidence, taking fish oils is essentially killing two birds with one stone! And who doesn’t love a 2-for-1.

And lastly, there is cod liver oil, the “OG” of fish oils. But in terms of skin care… stick to either Krill or Fish.

Equisetum Arvense / Horsetail – This botanical has the skin-specific mineral Silica, which is an incredibly important constituent in collagen. As discussed in the previous post in regards to Vitamin C, when you supplement the collagen cross-linking matrix, you are not only supporting the health of your skin and nails, but you are also aiding in bone repair and protecting against joint injury.

Urtica Dioca / Stinging Nettles – Urtica is used for a variety of conditions, but it is well known for its skin-related properties. Nettles has constituents that are anti-inflammatory as well as modulating to the immune system. The leaf of the plant acts as an “alterative” to our skin, which means that via the skin (and the kidneys), Urtica acts to remove wastes from our body. This is helpful in conditions like eczema and psoriasis. There are other constituents in Nettles that actually bind to hormonal receptors, like the Estradiol (E2) and Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG) receptors. This action helps to combat hormonally driven acne. This botanical is also super useful when you are experiencing an allergic reaction, such as hay fever and hives. And finally, Urtica has a pain reducing component, so for those more painful pimples, this may be the herb for you!

Liver Support - As previously mentioned, the liver plays a significant role in our body’s detoxification process. Therefore, it only makes sense that proper liver support is paramount to your beauty regimen. Antioxidants, like alpha lipoic acid (ALA), N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) and glutathione, are highly beneficial to the liver. There are also liver-specific herbs like Silybum marianum (milk thistle), Arctium lappa (burdock) and Taraxacum officinale (dandelion) that help process those pesky impurities. Additionally, our liver is the primary organ where hormone metabolism occurs so naturally liver health is super important in maintaining clear skin. Nutrients like Diindolylmethane (DIM) and Calcium-D-Glucarate help to break down the excess estrogens which are responsible for phenomenons such as cyclic acne, or the pimples that pop up while you’re menstruating.

As you can see, there are a myriad of ways to support healthy skin. Whether it is through proper hormone metabolism, detoxification support, collagen building or fighting inflammation... it can be treated with natural substances.
