How to Get That Glow


With summer slowly coming to a close, everyone is itching to take advantage of the final weeks of sun. And that means there’s a good chance you’ll be catching some rays! It goes without saying that it’s beyond important to protect our skin. We want to prevent not just skin cancer, but sun damage and wrinkles too.

Sadly, sunscreen can be loaded with chemicals and add to the overall toxic load our bodies are already burdened with. Our skin is the largest external organ of our body and absorbs everything that goes on it. 

Once absorbed, those toxins run through the bloodstream and eventually reach the liver. As the largest internal organ in our body, the liver is constantly cleaning up our systems from all the foreign substances we’re exposed to. If the liver begins to work overtime, our immune systems cannot properly function. That’s when we’re more prone to catching a cold or even breaking out.

Choosing cleaner beauty products is a necessity! It’s a simple way to decrease the toxins our bodies have to process. Add in a few other steps and you’ll be on the right path to that gorgeous end of summer glow:

    • Over 70,000 beauty products (including sunscreen) are searchable through their website. Here, you can check the level of toxicity per product. Each ingredient is listed, along with any “concerns” that would affect your body. 

    • Tip: the lower the score the better. Not only will you be protecting yourself from those UV’s, your skin and liver will be happier too.

  • Aloe is amazing, especially for skin! I know I’ve already mentioned it, but let’s take a closer look at the benefits.

    • Not only does it provide cooling relief after you get back from the beach, it contains vitamins A, C and E, all of which are great for peeling skin, anti-aging and overall complexion. Keeping an aloe plant at home is an easy, effective way to use it. Break open the leaf and apply directly to the skin. Store it in the fridge for an added cooling effect.

  • Hydration is key. When we are dehydrated, our skin becomes dry, dull and less likely to keep a nice tan. It also makes you more prone to peeling and wrinkles!

    • When it comes down to it, we are water. It makes up roughly 60-65% of our bodies! More often than not, we forget to drink water. The common recommendation is to consume 6-8 glasses each day (I recommend at least 100 ounces). According to the CDC, only 22% of US adults fall into that category! Fact: if you’re thirsty, you’re already dehydrated. This can negatively affect digestion, mood and even brain function.

      • Energy levels get a nice boost! One study gave a group of individuals water after restricting them for 12 hours. Nearly all participants noticed reversal of cognitive impairments such as decreased short term memory and concentration.

      • Digestion ramps up! Our bodies depend on water for regular bowel movements. This is a good thing, especially in terms of cleaning out our systems and getting rid of that toxic build up.

      • Hydration helps with weight loss! To properly burn calories, we need to be hydrated. Fun fact: sometimes thirst is disguised as the feeling of hunger. Drinking a glass before meals helps you feel fuller and prevents overeating.

      • Your skin will be thanking you! Water helps to maintain the skin’s elasticity and plumpness, lending to that youthful glow. Additionally, as the body begins to flush out toxins, breakouts can decrease too.
