Summertime Staples

July 4th has passed in the blink of an eye! Can you believe it? You know what that means - we’re in the thick of summertime! The first thing that comes to mind when I think of summer is relaxing in the sunshine and spending time with family and friends.

Exposure to the sun does have its perks. It’s essential for our bodies to create vitamin D, plus spending time outdoors is lovely for a mood-boost (rooftop season here I come!). However, sometimes we can get a little carried away and end up sunburned, dehydrated and just plain exhausted - yikes! Luckily, I have some advice for you.

Now that summer has officially arrived, let’s take a look at some easy tips to have the perfect day, while playing it safe:

  • Drink responsibly! Making sure to have one water for every alcoholic drink is crucial. Alcohol is a diuretic, so it speeds up the dehydration process. Add in spending time in the sun and it’s not the best combo.

    • If you’re planning on drinking, activated charcoal and B-vitamins are great supplements to have on hand.

      • Activated charcoal binds to toxins, helping your body release them more efficiently. This is especially beneficial for when we want just one (or two!) more of those margaritas.

      • B-vitamins are super important for the brain and nervous system, as well as maintaining energy. Being that these are water soluble vitamins, they are flushed from our systems pretty quickly. Alcohol tends to hasten this process. Taking an activated B-complex before you drink will help you avoid a hangover and replenish your B’s.

  • Opting for the right alcohol is a simple, yet important choice to make. One of my favorite brands, Bulletproof, uses an amazing infographic detailing which alcohol is best to drink and has the least amount of “hangover toxins”. Reference it whenever you need!

    • Patio weather is the perfect time to break out some fun cocktail recipes, but more often than not, they contain so much hidden sugar! To still get that summertime theme, use fresh watermelon to make sangria or muddle berries into your drink. These natural add-ins are just as effective and taste even better than most mixers (healthier too!).

  • Restoring electrolytes is key to feeling good after spending the day out and about. Our bodies naturally regulate temperature through sweating, so we stay cool in the heat. In this process, we lose sodium, potassium and calcium, which can make us feel lethargic and our muscles tight.

    • Coconut water is a great, natural choice for boosting electrolytes. It is slightly alkaline and loaded with nutrients (an 8 ounce glass contains more potassium than a banana!). Not only is that more highly concentrated than a regular sports drink, there aren’t any added sugars either. Harmless Harvest and Vita Coco are some of my favorites!

    • Having an electrolyte supplement on hand is a super easy way to get your system back to feeling its best. Simply add into your water and you’ll be set! Just make sure to drink them throughout the day – not all at once. I recommend using 1/3 of the packet per water bottle. This allows enough time for your body’s receptors to properly absorb them. My brand of choice comes in packets, which is even easier to slip into your bag while on the go.

  • Taking a nap after a long day in the sun can help our bodies greatly. Our systems put in extra work when exposed to those UV’s for extended periods of time. Regulating temperature takes a lot of effort! Not to mention all of the additional chemical processes taking place.

    • If you feel sleepy, don't ignore it. Napping for just 20-30 minutes can help wake you up, while allowing your body to rest.

  • Aloe Vera works wonders for post-sun care! It has been used for thousands of years as a therapeutic tool to heal an array of conditions, one of them being sunburn. You can grab some from the store or even take the aloe leaf itself and break it open - don’t be scared! Apply directly to the skin for instant relief. Once opened, keep the plant leaf in the fridge, cover the end with a damp washcloth or saran wrap and enclose with a rubber band or hair tie to keep the gel fresh.

Clearly, there are so many easy tricks to incorporate into your summer routine that will make your days even more productive, while still having fun! At the end of the day, don’t forget to follow the three summertime R’s: rest, rehydrate and repeat. Cheers to this summer!
